Environmental · Social · Governance

At Mersey Design Group, ESG principles are deeply embedded into our culture and how we approach every project. Our multidisciplinary expertise across architecture, interior design and cost management is guided by a clear commitment to sustainability, inclusion, and ethical governance. We work in alignment with The Procurement Act 2023 delivering legacy projects that meet the five missions of The Social Value Model 2025, supporting clients in delivering projects that provide measurable public benefit alongside high-quality built outcomes.

Our Approach to Social Value

Social value initiatives are designed to leave a legacy long after a project is delivered. At Mersey Design Group, our in-house social sustainability team collaborates with clients from the earliest stages to understand what best value means in the context of each community. We explore local challenges, map opportunities, and co-develop strategies that are realistic, proportionate, and aligned with project scope and scale.

Our work is focused on delivering outcomes that are relevant and long-lasting—whether that’s increasing employment and training opportunities, designing for inclusion, or helping public bodies meet their wider place-based objectives. Social value is not an add-on; it’s a core part of how we plan and deliver successful projects.

Delivering on the Five Missions of the Social Value Model 2025

To help kickstart economic growth, we actively support local economies through targeted recruitment, Work Placements and In-House Training.  We create opportunities for people at all stages of their careers, while prioritising the use of local and regional suppliers, including SMEs and VCSEs delivery partners.

In support of the mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower, we embed low-carbon principles into every design. From early-stage concept development through to delivery, we focus on reducing both operational and embodied carbon. Our team delivers practical, efficient solutions that support clients in their goals to achieve their net-zero ambitions—without compromising on quality or functionality.

Our projects are designed with safety, accessibility, and social inclusion in mind. We use design to improve perceptions of place, reduce antisocial behaviour, and create environments that promote pride and ownership. Through careful consideration of visibility, lighting, and spatial layout, we help foster safer, more connected communities.

To break down barriers to opportunity, we champion inclusive design and inclusive practice. Every project considers how people of all abilities, backgrounds, and identities will access and experience the spaces we create. Internally, we promote equity and diversity within our own teams and collaborate with local organisations, schools, and colleges to offer education, outreach, and entry into the built environment sector.

In helping to build an NHS fit for the future, we design healthcare environments that prioritise patient and staff wellbeing, efficiency, and adaptability. We understand the evolving needs of healthcare delivery and develop flexible solutions that support clinical outcomes, digital transformation, and long-term sustainability. Our healthcare design work is fully aligned with NHS social value and net-zero commitments.

Procurement Act 2023 Compliance

The Procurement Act 2023 has reshaped public procurement, placing social, environmental, and ethical considerations at the centre of the tendering process. Mersey Design Group fully supports this shift from the former MEAT (Most Economically Advantageous Tender) model to the Most Advantageous Tender (MAT) approach.

We work closely with public sector clients to ensure projects meet these new expectations—delivering quality, accountability, and impact. Our team understands the importance of proportionality, transparency, and meaningful social value outcomes, and we embed these standards into our project planning, delivery, and reporting processes.

Design with Purpose

At Mersey Design Group, we believe design should improve lives—not just for today, but for the long term. Through ESG-led practice and a clear understanding of place-based priorities, we help clients deliver projects that create lasting value across communities, economies, and the environment.
